University of Forestry
The Higher Forestry education derives from the far 1925 in the detached Faculty of Agronomy and Forestry (FAF) in the University of Sofia. In 1953 a separate Institute of Forestry has been established as one of the five majors is Forestry. The Institute became University scarcely in 1995. Today University of Forestry is the exact place for the one who have chosen to be close to the Nature and who would like to help through their knowledge for its protection and for the preservation and enrichment of its unique flora and fauna.
The University of Forestry is the only high educational institution in Bulgaria with its high qualified teachers, trains specialists in the field of Forestry, Landscape architecture, Forest management, Engeneering design, Woodworking, Furniture manufacturing, Agronomy and Veterinary medicine with eight majors. The training of the students is held in three Science degrees and up to its span they are Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctor’s degree.
There are six faculties in the University – Forestry, Forest industry, Ecology and Landscape architecture, Agronomy, Veterinary Medicine and Economic management. A Post-graduate and Qualification centre has been established in 1999. It holds out an opportunity to obtain much knowledge in varied and interesting fields of study like Kinology, Snail farming, Journalism, Horticulture, Bonsai and other.
The University consists of two buildings – the Central building where the educational work is lead and the ELC (Educational Lab Complex) where the computer halls, the library and more specialized offices, where students can practice different studies take place. There is also a big greenhouse in the University with experimental areas around it and also a huge dendrarium where many rare for the country tree and shrub species are included. The University offer to it’s students also huge number of sports like swimming, table- tennis, volleyball, skiing, fitness, calanethics and many other.
During the term students have some educational practices during the year, some of which are carried out in the two Educational and Experimental forest bases in Barzia and Jundola. Both have modern equipment bases, necessary to make different measures of conservation and utilization of the forest have been taken there. Good conditions for game management and breeding activities have been created also.
In ELC “Petrohan” located in village Barzia a Bulgarian – Swiss project for multifunctional and sustainable managing of the beech-tree has been making. Scientific researches on the renovation of the beech and hunting tourism are in progress, conditions for preservation and increasing of the game are made.
The base Jundola is situated between the Rila mountain and the Western Rhodopes. The practices on dendrology, sylviculture, forest management and other specialties have been implemented there. The baså has many experimental areas where researches and observations on the vegetation have been made permanently.
There are another practice studies in Evksinograd, Vitosha mountain, Lulin and Lozenska mountain. There the students make examination and description of the vegetation and learn how to identify as well the frequently seen as the rare and protected species of the Bulgarian flora. They also have the opportunity to be introduced with the leading companies connected to their speciality during other practices led in Sofia.
The opportunities for development and specialization in the University of Forestry are great. Those, who have graduated, have real chances to apply for a nice and interesting job. The perspectives for realization are many – in private or state companies and institutions, departments and organizations. A great part of the students find work in their speciality before they have finished their education; and those who have already graduated, are widely demanded as specialists.
